As part of the cubing community, you will probably encounter some of these cubing terms. It is important to know what they mean.

Cubing termsEdit

  • +2: A penalty for various actions in cube competitions, enforced by the WCA. Adds 2 seconds to the solving time.
  • Algorithm: A set of moves that is designed to do something useful.
  • Average of 5 (Ao5): The official format for WCA competitions, the average of 5 solves. Higher averages (i.e. Ao12) also exist.
  • Bandaging: The property that some turns may not be possible in certain situations.
  • Bandaging (mod): A modification of a puzzle created by attaching two pieces together so that they can't be separated, resulting in bandaging.
  • Blind Solve (BLD): A solve of a puzzle while blindfolded.
  • Center piece: A piece that is in the center of a face OR a piece that acts as a center of rotation.
  • Commutator: An algorithm constructed from two smaller algorithms A and B, which consists of A, B, undoing A, then undoing B. An example is R U L F U' R' F' L'.
  • Conjugate: An algorithm constructed from two smaller algorithms A and B, which consists of A, B, and then undoing A. An example is R U L F U' R'
  • Corner piece: A piece that is at the intersection of multiple cuts.
  • Cubies: Pieces of a cube.
  • Did Not Finish (DNF): The result of an incomplete solve - that is, when the timer was stopped, the puzzle isn't solved.
  • Did Not Start (DNS): The result of a solve where the timer wasn't started. Considered the worst possible "solving time".
  • Edge piece: A piece that is at the intersection of two cuts.
  • Jumbling: Bandaging caused by mixup.
  • Mixup: The property that two different types of pieces can be interchanged.
  • Parity: A state where when a puzzle is reduced to a smaller puzzle, the resulting position is impossible on that smaller puzzle.
  • Piece: One of the parts that make up a twisty puzzle.
  • Scrambled: A puzzle that is not solved
  • Shape mod: A puzzle that has the same mechanism as another puzzle but looks different.
  • Shapeshifting: When a puzzle changes shape from what shape it is normally.
  • Sticker mod: A puzzle that is the same as another except for stickers.
  • Slice Turn: A turn of the middle of the puzzle
  • Sune (pronounced Soon-ee): The algorithm R U R' U R U2 R'
  • Supercube: A puzzle where center orientation matters.
  • WCA puzzle: One of the eleven puzzles supported by the World Cube Association: 2x2x2 (Pocket Cube), 3x3x3, 4x4x4, 5x5x5, 6x6x6, 7x7x7, Pyraminx, Megaminx, Skewb, Square-1, or Rubik's Clock
